چکیده

A lactose-fre3, medium-chain triglyceride (MCD)-caein formula (Lactose-Free Portagen) was used with success inthe management of four children with kwashiorkor and three infants with persistent hypoalbuminemia, two of whom had associated Infec tons. Asecond formula (Pregestimil), based on acasein hydrolysate and MCTs, witi' iextrose as the major carbohydrate, was used successfully Infive infants with severe marasmus, one with kwashiorkor, and five with marasmus, severe diarrhea, and infection, The absence of lactose was of definite benefit, as was probably the MCT content. It is probable that the dextrose was of benefit to some of the sickest infants but this was not proved n these studies.

Lactose-Free Compared with Lactose-Containing Formula in Dietary Management of Acute Childhood Diarrhea

OBJECTIVE Few reports are available on some benefits, such as shortened duration of diarrhea and better weight gain, for lactose-free over lactose-containing formula in acute childhood diarrhea. We evaluated the effects of lactose-free formula in dietary management of acute diarrhea in formula-fed children. METHODS This controlled-clinical trial was conducted on formula-fed children, aged 1 t...

Effects of a single oral load of medium-chain triglyceride on serum lipid and insulin levels in man.

Analysis of serum free fatty acids by gas-liquid chromatography showed high proportions (27-57%) of octanoic acid for up to 4 hr after the ingestion of a single oral load of medium-chain triglyceride (approximately 1 g/kg body weight) in four volunteers. The effects of a medium-chain triglyceride load on the concentrations of plasma free long-chain fatty acids, plasma glucose, serum insulin, an...

Lactose intolerance among severely malnourished children with diarrhoea admitted to the nutrition unit, Mulago hospital, Uganda

BACKGROUND Lactose intolerance is a common complication of diarrhoea in infants with malnutrition and a cause of treatment failure. A combination of nutritional injury and infectious insults in severe protein energy malnutrition reduces the capacity of the intestinal mucosa to produce lactase enzyme necessary for the digestion of lactose. The standard management of severe malnutrition involves ...

Effect of a lactose-free milk formula supplemented with bifidobacteria and streptococci on the recovery from acute diarrhoea.

Probiotics have been proposed for the management and prevention of acute diarrhoea in infants. A double-blind, randomised, placebo controlled study was carried out in 224 Chinese infants 6 to 36 months of age with severe acute diarrhoea and free from moderate or severe malnutrition. After oral or parenteral rehydration, they were allocated to one of three groups: a lactose-free formula (Control...
